Washington Irving wrote: “There is sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition and of unspeakable love.”
This touches on the great mysteries of life and love that permeates the heart and mind in a time of loss. The memories that mom shared of her younger life were some of the most precious of shared moments. She spoke with such love of her family and how she was so blessed because of her wonderful childhood saying she couldn’t have asked for more. She always spoke of her parents with love and utmost respect. Her memories of the long hard work days and sacrifices that were made such that came from growing up in times of a long ago past that many of us today can only imagine. She worked hard in her young years and married Dad who had a work ethic similar to her own. There were many sleepless nights of work and worry but they made the best of the early years and never stopped until long after typical retirement age. Few have worked like our parents. Even with the never ending work on a farm she always spoke of her blessed life. She would always say she married the best man in the world.
Mom is the youngest and the last of the original Vancuren family. She was lonely for her family and her husband since they were all gone years before her, but she is home now with all of them. Her life was filled with joy due to her love of family and the community she was part of. She always said and I quote “there is no place in the world I would rather be than right here at home in Big Beaver.” Many descendants came from the Vancuren family and have likely heard some of the old stories. So please remember all of our history with love and admiration not just for the Vancuren family but the stories of all the original settlers of this area because we are all intertwined. It was just a moment in time of great people that came together with their struggles and friendships that made this small town a great place to live and grow up in. It is a place that everyone comes together in a time of joy and in a time of need.
So to everyone that is part of the legacy of this great town and the incredible people through the generations please pass along the memories lest they be forgotten. Mom, may you rest in peace with our Lord Jesus and those you love. We know you told Dad to wait for you so I’m sure he was there to greet you. Give him a hug from us. We will see you and Dad again someday down the road. Thank you for being wonderful parents and grandparents. We love you both forever.
