Gladys Jaques, of Assiniboia, SK passed away April 3, 2018 in Assiniboia, SK. Gladys Patricia Sand was born in the Assiniboia Union Hospital on July 4, 1929. Her parents Freda and Alfred Sand farmed in the Lakenheath area. She grew up on the farm with her sisters Helen and Doris, helping with farming chores and often recounted her less than fond memory of having to bring the cows in from the pasture. Freda was a teacher, so Gladys had the pleasure of being taught Grade 1 at home by her mother. After that experience she attended schools in Lakenheath and Limerick, going on to become a nurse and graduating from the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital in 1951. She worked at the Assiniboia Hospital for the next five years but always maintained contact with her classmates through the many reunions held in Regina for years to follow. Gladys met her husband Byron when a group of the local bachelors began dating the single nurses in town. They eventually married in 1954 at the Limerick United Church and were together for 57 wonderful years. They spent their time living, working and supporting the community, and they raised two children, a daughter Patty and son Murray. They both have fond family memories of hosting holiday events, going on many camping trips within the province and taking vacation road trips to Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba to visit with relatives. Gladys was involved in the community and with the United Church, singing in the choir for 60 years and volunteered as their treasurer and secretary. She played the piano, the guitar and accordion and loved to sing. She also enjoyed both round and square dancing in her younger years and knitting, crocheting and gardening in the latter. Gladys was a devoted Grandmother to her grandsons and while they lived in many parts of the country she often came to care for younger grandchildren as new ones were arriving. The grandchildren have fond memories of the delivery of the Christmas box of baking and her delicious cakes and cookies when they came to visit. She also became a great -grandmother with the arrival of two sweet little boys born in 2011 and 2017 when Pat and Murray became grandparents themselves … with still not a girl in sight being born into the family! While Glady’s siblings and immediate family were spread out geographically – they are all still connected thanks to a long legacy of belief in, and love for family. Gladys would have liked this poem: “Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard but always near – still loved, still missed and ever dear”. Gladys was predeceased by her husband Barney (2011); parents, Alfred & Freda (Shultz) Sand; sister Helen (Cyril) Ross and brother-in-law Douglas Strachan. Gladys is survived by daughter Patricia (Edward) Martens and son Murray (Therese) Jaques; seven grandchildren: Jason, Justin, Jonathan, James (Melissa) Martens and Nathan (Caitlin), Samuel, and Thomas Jaques, two great-grandchildren Jacob Martens and Graydon Jaques, and sister Doris Strachan. Funeral Service for Gladys was held Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 2:00 pm in St. Paul’s United Church, Assiniboia, SK with Reverend Marilyn Leuty officiating. Music Ministry led by St. Paul’s United Church Choir. Pallbearers were family: Jim & Melissa, Kent & Tracy. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK.
