Harald Mastad, late of Assiniboia and formerly of the McCord district, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 8, 2012 at the age of 95.
Harald Johannes Mastad was born on June 25, 1917 to parents Hans and Ellen. He was baptized on August 19, 1917 and later confirmed. He attended Pebble Hill School after which he worked on the family farm. The highlight of his school years was being at school at 7 am to play ball. At the age of sixteen, he went to work on a threshing crew. Along with playing, hunting, trapping, fishing and playing cards were his favorite past times. In 1943 he was called to the army. Due to his father's farm accident he received a compassionate discharge in 1945. He continued farming, along with helping his dad to farm.
On January 8, 1946 he married Doris McLeod. He told his mother he was getting married so he would have someone to cook for him. From this union were born 3 daughters, Norma, Eunice and Donna. Harald and Doris lived on the farm south of McCord where they continued to reside and to care for his parents. In 1990, Harald and Doris retired to Assiniboia where they have made many new friends. Harald remained active until failing health in his early nineties. Due to failing health he was admitted to Long Term Care in Assiniboia last January. He reminded us frequently how it was "just like being in jail." In spite of this feeling, he did participate in various activities and especially enjoyed playing bingo. The family being very appreciative of the excellent care he received.
Predeceased by his grandson, Bradley Sandor, parents Hans and Ellen, and brother Melvin, he is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris (McLeod), 3 daughters, Norma (John) Wiens and children Tim (Kim), Travis (Corrine), Tyler (Nicoelle); Eunice Mastad and children Chera (Stephen), Tasha (Troy), Mark (Niki); Donna (Rick) Sandor and children Devin (Amanda), Kyla, Jared (Pam), Joel (Gabrielle) and 16 great-grandchildren.
