Isabell Schmidt of Rockglen, Saskatchewan and for a short period of time, Regina, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully in her sleep, after returning home to her “rolling hills of home”. Isabell was born, raised, and spent most of her eighty-eight years in Rockglen. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, her son, Winton, her parents Karl and Jean Hansen, and her brothers, Victor and Elmer. She is survived by her sister Elsie Knoss, sister-in-law, Lorna (Betty) Hansen, sister-in-law Opal Schick, daughter Dinah (Doug) Almond, son Wes Schmidt, daughter-in-law Angie Schmidt, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Isabell was born on the family farm January 28, 1930, heralding in the Dirty Thirties. As the eldest, there was lots of hard work helping out around the farm, but Isabell was determined, and against great odds, went on to get her Grade XII and her teaching certificate through Normal School. She taught at Hope Valley and Borderland Schools. She married Bill Schmidt in 1950, and quit teaching to help raise their children, with the arrival of Dinah in 1952, Wes in 1954, and Winton in 1959. Isabell designed their first house on the Art McCutcheon farm, and went on to design their new house with its unusual roof design on their family farm on the Bench, as well as their retirement home in Rockglen. She never shied away from a challenge, whether a baseball game as a teenager, or an opportunity to start a new family farm, selling parts at their Massey Ferguson business while Bill was farming, helping to bring in the rural telephone system, or starting a business called “Izzy’s Place” (just to see if she could do it) -- or even becoming a reporter for the Assiniboia Times. Bill and Isabell loved the social aspects of small-town Saskatchewan, from the gatherings for birthdays and anniversaries, to the tobogganing and snowmobiling parties, and eventually to square dancing where they developed friends across Canada and the United States. They loved to travel, but Isabell’s favorite trip was to Ireland and Denmark to see her families “roots”. Isabell was self-taught in many things, but she excelled in her embroidery art work for the grandchildren’s coveralls, and her reupholstering and refinishing of furniture, but her real passion was quilting. Isabell had many health challenges over the years, but now she is at peace. The Funeral Service was held at Rockglen Community Hall on April 3, 2018 at 11:00 am, officiated by Linda Kirby. A Tribute was given by Isabell’s daughter Dinah. A wonderful Music Ministry was provided by Isabell’s granddaughter Rina Schmidt, including “Wind Beneath my Wings “. Pallbearers were David Almond, Cody Hansen, Ryan Henry, Garry Magnien, Jordan Stack, Rory Van De Kamp and Mike Gelowsky. Interment took place in the Rockglen Municipal Cemetery. Donations were gratefully accepted for the Rockglen Health Care Auxiliary Memorial Fund for the Grasslands Health Center. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, Saskatchewan.
