Maggie was born and grew up in Grayson, Saskatchewan. Maggie completed grade eight and then began working, first as mother’s helper and as cook for threshing crews at harvest time, then at the Regina Grey Nun’s Hospital in the laundry, and later as an aide in nursing homes at the various communities she lived. While raising her own children she also cared for foster children in the early 60’s. One of Alf and Maggie’s many enterprises over the years was operating the hotel, bar, and restaurant in Candiac in the late 60’s. Maggie enjoyed most living on their farm near Crooked River where together she and Alf raised cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, planted crops, and Maggie cultivated her love of gardening and flowers.
Maggie and Alf were married on January 8, 1955 in Grayson. They lived in several Saskatchewan communities over the years – Prince Albert, Regina, Weyburn, Candiac, Yorkton, Swift Current, Crooked River, Sylvania, and Assiniboia. Wherever our family lived mom made the best of it by pouring her love into it and making it our home. Maggie sewed her children’s clothes as well as her own and always added her own artistic flair. She made many quilts over the years and gave them to her children and grandchildren. Many a warm sweater was knitted and to this day they keep us warm with her love. Maggie occasionally wrote letters to the editor on topics of interest to her. As her family grew, she enjoyed looking after and travelling with Alf to visit their grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Maggie’s family would like to express our sincere appreciation to all those who cared for Maggie: Dr. Carulei and staff, the team at Ross Payant Nursing Home, the Southland Co-op pharmacy team, the physicians and staff at Red Coat Primary Healthcare Clinic, and the team at the Assiniboia Union Hospital. Your expertise and loving care in Maggie’s last years and days are greatly valued and sincerely appreciated.
Maggie was laid to rest on March 2, 2018 in Regina. The Service was held at the Victoria Avenue Funeral Chapel with Father Dennis Remot officiating. Readers were Daniel Glaeske and John Nevile-Smith. Honourary Pallbearers were granddaughters and Pallbearers were grandsons. Tribute was delivered by son, Doug.
