Maurice William Nekurak - On April 12, 2023 this big man left a big hole in our hearts when he passed away. Moe was born November 19, 1931 to Elizabeth Wasylena Nekurak (nee Danylchuk) (born in Alvena, SK) and William Nekurak (born in Poland). He grew up in Saskatoon playing basketball and football, one time even breaking into his high school gym to get in some extra hoops. He graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate, and moved to Melfort with his family to be in the restaurant business. Melfort is where he met the love of his life and married Ruth Easson. They had been married 69 years at the time of his passing. They moved several times in the first few years, settling in Assiniboia in 1958 where Dad took over the Franklin Hotel Restaurant. He then became a rep for MacDonald’s Consolidated. Then he met Malcom Fraser and they became fast friends. Dad moved over to Malcolm’s business, Glauser’s and co-managed as well as being the meat cutter. They were in business together for years, and were good friends for life. Moe and Ruth took over the clothing end of the business (which had moved into a different building by this time) and it became Double M Enterprises (Malcolm and Moe). In later life, Moe was elected to the Board of Conexus Credit Union and spent several years working as board member. Dad was involved in his community, was in Kinsmen and K-40 for years, volunteered his amazing cooking skills at the rodeo, annual trade show, and several more community events. He was on the board of the local museum, helped out with Meals on Wheels, and other charitable organizations. His favourite place in the world was his cabin at Waskesiu, where he spent many many hours out on the lake fishing. He loved taking family and friends out as well and always hosted the resulting fish fry. Moe was well known throughout his life for his cooking skills, his volunteerism, his close friendships and his devotion to his family. He never passed up an opportunity to stop and visit close and extended family. As a dad, he passed down great work ethic, kindness, and a love of the outdoors to his kids.
Moe was predeceased by his parents as well as his brother Orest (Gertie) and his sister Olive (Charlie). He is survived by his wife Ruth, his children: David (Dianne), Cathie (George), Caron (Chantal), Rob (Darcy), grandchildren Samantha Rempel, Mark Nekurak, Andrew Santo, Ashley Paradis, Drew Nekurak, Sean Schultz, Sarah Nekurak, nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
A private family barbeque will be held to celebrate and honour Moe’s life.
