Nona Lucas (nee McLeod), aged 86, of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully with family at her side in the early afternoon of September 22, 2013 at the Assiniboia Union Hospital. Nona had been recently diagnosed with leukemia. She was born March 3, 1927 at Cabri, Saskatchewan, the youngest of nine children born to Henry and Lottie McLeod. Nona attended Butte Valley School and Cabri High School. In Cabri, she belonged to the United Church Young People’s and the Church Women’s Auxiliary. She enjoyed curling from an early age. Nona worked in the Royal Bank in Cabri prior to marrying Bernard Morgan on October 27, 1945. In 1957 Bern and Nona moved their family of seven children to Assiniboia, where two more children, Dawn and Jeff, were born. Here Nona attended Home & School, the Co-op Guild and the Women’s Auxiliary of the United Church, where she taught Sunday School and led the Explorers (girls aged 9-11) for three years. When the Women’s Auxiliary became the United Church Women (U.C.W.), Nona was the first social functions convenor and first vice-president. Later she served on the Church Council at different times and especially enjoyed serving in the Mission and Service portfolios. In addition to raising her family, Nona managed the Eaton’s Catologue Sales Office during the early 1970’s. She worked for Welcome Wagon from 1975 to 1976. Nona loved people and thought the more the merrier. She loved to dance, curl, bowl and travel, but was never happier than when preparing a dinner or party for family or friends. She wrote two books of memoires, My Hourglass (1987) and The Dance (2007). Nona married Jack Lucas of Readlyn, Saskatchewan on January 25, 1973. They had a happy life traveling and enjoying their many grandchildren. Nona was predeceased by husbands Bernard Morgan (d. 1979) and Jack Lucas (d. 1989), one son, Curtis Morgan, her parents, Henry & Lottie McLeod and siblings: Howard (Beth) McLeod, Louise (Vern) Wight, Hazel (Melvin) Baldwin, Lois (Colin) Sutherland, Norman (Blanche) McLeod, Jessie Coghill, Bill McLeod, and brother-in-law Albert Lines. Nona is survived by eight children: Trevor (Maria) Morgan, Theron Morgan, Heather (Harvey) Forsythe, Layne (Barry) Payant, Vonda (Lyndon) Sinclair, Loretta (George) Pryce, Dawn Morgan and Jeffrey Morgan; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, sister Jean Lines, sister-in-law Eleanor McLeod and brother-in-law Ambrose Coghill and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
