Owen Hodnefield

Owen Hodnefield, age 92, passed away October 6, 2022 at the Assiniboia Union Hospital Long-Term Care. Owen Roy Hodnefield was born on December 5, 1929 to Anton and Jenny (nee Klemson) Hodnefield on a farm near Ettington, SK. He was followed by a brother Gunnar Adrian on June 9, 1931. Still later by a sister Anna Malena on November 19, 1937, and followed by another brother Jon Warren on March 12, 1943. Owen and his siblings received part of their education at Cathryne country school. In 1948, Owen and Gunnar attended college at Outlook and received their grade eleven. Then they received their grade twelve at Mazenod School. Owen returned to Outlook to finish his grade twelve and some courses in bible, and there graduated. The following fall, Owen attended teachers college (Normal School) in Moose Jaw. His first school was near Buchanan, SK. He then taught in various schools in southern Saskatchewan. After fifteen years of teaching, he retired and began working for Joe Kesslar as an electrical assistant. When Mr. Kesslar passed away, Owen began his trade as an electrician. He continued in this trade for 24 years. After his retirement, he continued to live on the family farm.

Owen faithfully attended the Lutheran Church in Mossbank. He had served as Sunday school teacher, chairperson for the congregation and parish president. He was keenly interested in bible study and attended all the bible study classes held at the church. He did a lot of research on his own to learn everything he could. He had a passion for bible study that lasted his whole life.

Owen enjoyed many sports. He played baseball, golf, tennis, and was an avid curler. Some other interests include playing guitar and singing in the church choirs and the Assiniboia Community Choir, gardening and wood working.

His father passed away in Apr 1972 and his mother in Aug 1991, his brother-in-law Leo Dubord in Mar 1998, his brother Gunnar in Sept 2012 and his sister Anna Dubord in Dec 2021. Owen is survived by his brother Jon (Arlene), sister-in-law Sharon Hodnefield, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Service for Owen was held Monday, October 17, 2022 at 1:30 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mossbank, SK. Pastor Bill Cantelon officiated. Pallbearers were Mike Hodnefield Mitch Lorrain, Dustin Hodnefield, Mitchell Edwards, Warren Hodnefield and Lane Hodnefield. Interment in Grand Valley Lutheran Cemetery, Ettington, SK.
