He was born in Ponteix, Saskatchewan on December 23, 1937. His family resided in Wallard, Saskatchewan. At the age of 14, Robert started working for farmers and ranchers in the area. When he was 21 years old, he was hired as a truck driver for Wagner Transport in Mankota. It was here he met and married Carol Hughes on September 9, 1960.
Robert found work as a water well driller in Regina in 1962. In 1965, the family moved to Calgary, Alberta. Robert worked in the city during the summer and up north for three months in the winter. He found work for Calgary Transit as a bus driver for six years, then started a trucking company with a limestone hauling contract.
Tiring of city life, they moved back to Mankota, starting a restaurant, calling it Robbie’s Food Bar. Carol was entrusted with the operation of the business when Saskatchewan Transit Company was looking for a driver out of Mankota. It was here that Robert discovered his calling. He loved meeting with fellow drivers, travelling and was interested in people. He was a good listener. He drove for 15 accident-free years, but as per company policy, had to retire when he reached the age of 65 years old.
Robert loved fishing, dancing, music and singing.
