Rosemarie Anne Martel

Rosemarie Anne Martel (nee Ellert) passed away May 27, 2016 at the Assiniboia Union Hospital Integrated Facility with her loving family by her side. Rose was born February 9, 1934 on the family farm, Little Woody district, Saskatchewan. She attended Little Woody School and often spoke of the long treks to and from school. Rose’s first job was babysitting for Dorothy Thompson who was a high school teacher with two children. Her next employment took her to Swift Egg Handling Station. In 1952 she was employed by Grant Ritchie as a hardware clerk. From there she went to work for Ben Waldman at Waldman’s Hardware. On her 19th Birthday Rose met Ted Martel and they were married on October 9, 1954. Together they raised a family of five. In 1970 she started as a Nurse’s Aide for Ross Payant Nursing Home. In 1971 she took the position of Activity Director at Pioneer Lodge and held that position for 29 years until she retired in 2000. Family and work were very important to Rose and she always stood up for the underdog. She loved gardening, cooking, antiques, music, and especially garage sales. Rose was always up on all the town happenings. She could always be counted on to donate her time and baking for family and friends. She was very passionate when playing cards and watching sports with her brothers and husband. The Blue Jays was her favorite ball team. She will be sadly missed. Predeceased by an infant son, her husband Ted and her parents Agatha and Andrew Ellert; siblings: Wilfred Ellert (Alice), Simon Ellert, Lloyd Ellert (Fern), Ernie Ellert (Sonya), Helen Marchand (Louie), Eileen Schaefer (Bill), Gladys Gorman, Rita Ellert, Alice Ellert (Don), Rosemarie is survived by five children: Darlene (Bill) of Surrey, BC, Trent (Ang) of Airdrie, AB, Brenda-Lee Friesen of Martensville, SK, Holly Hordenchuk of Assiniboia and Stacey (Sherie) of Assiniboia; ten grandchildren: Scott, Erin, Alan, Crystal, Tyler, Cassidy, Hope, Joel, Jordan and Josh; four great-grandchildren: Kaida, Emma, Olivia and Atticus; siblings: Theresa Chowaniec (Rudy), Jack Ellert (Madeline) and Lorraine Mickleborough (Bob); sister-in-law Ramona Ellert; brother-in-law Marvin Gorman as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Rose’s Life was held Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 2:00 pm in Ross Funeral Chapel, Assiniboia.Gary K.Miller facilitator. Tributes were given by son, Stacey and sister, Lorraine.
