As I read each of the memories from my fellow co-workers, I have a smile on my face and gratitude in my heart for having known Derby and worked with him at Edmonton Institution from 2001 until he retired.
One particular memory I have is of us working together on a unit, Derby had recently discovered the music of Feist and her song, "1234". Well, I knew that song by heart by the end of my shift because he played it over and over! So much so, that even now, after 12 years that song still reminds me of him!
His laugh, sense of humor and common sense in a workplace that rarely made sense made our days brighter and better because he was there.
Cari and Zach, he spoke of you often and with such love. The last time we saw Derby and Zach, they were in Walmart in the toy section. Wes and I talked and laughed with him for over an hour while our 2 kids and Zach tested all the toys!
We will miss you, Derby. But will always be remembered with a smile and will never forget the sound of your laugh.
With love,
Wes and Helen Richards

Thank you Steve for gracing us with you humor, honesty, wit and calmness. I was always glad when at work with the inmate and knew that you were posted on the post where I would be working as then I knew the day would be a good one. You did not stir the pot and thank you for that. Rest in peace Steve. Derby will be missed.

My sincere condolences to Steve Derbyshires' family, I enjoyed working with Steve in the IPSO's office, his sense of humour was infectious and I will always remember him talking about being so in love with life. He never forgot even the smallest detail and was quick to let you know about it. He spoke fondly of his love of his life... his wife & son and with his role as stay-at-home daddy. Your CSC brothers & sisters will always remember you!

Steve was one of the Officers on my Crew at Edmonton Max. A very bright and capable Officer. He had an infectious sense of humour and was liked by all. It is sad that he has passed this young. My sympathies to his Family. He will be missed.

Cari and Zachary, Julie and Ted, Diane and Joe, Jo-anne, Roger and Deanna and family, Linda and family, Kelly and Laura and family, Clayton and family - Steve brought a lot of light to so many people. As I read over the messages here, it is clear this his spirit shone brightly on everyone he met. Like so many here, it is his easy smile and love of fun that comes to mind when I think of him. May memories bring some comfort. Thinking of you all, with love.

Derby... you will be missed my friend. You were one of my favorite CX. You were caring, compassionate, and funny as hell. You were a man of integrity, morals, and values; someone who I looked up to at Edmonton Institution.
The people who made an impact in your life you have a hard time when they are gone... I can’t believe you are gone my friend. 😥❤️😥

Cari, Zach and Family,
Beyond saddened for your loss of Steve,..a coworker, trusted friend, jokester... with an innate ability to put a light twist on words. A foozeball game year's ago on New Year's Eve, he won the game prior to and again after midnight. (Lost every other game) "Derby's' take: "Foozeball champ 2yrs in a row!" With our occasional calls after retirement, could listen to Steve and Zach, all the while trying to figure who was the bigger giggle monster, ... all I know for certain is I never saw him so happy. Cari and Zach, may peace find you and know my heart cries for your terrible loss.

To Steve's family.
I wish to pass on my deepest condolences to all. I know it is going to be very painful. Always remember the good times with your Dad, your Husband, your Brother, your Son and your Uncle.

As one of Steve's supervisors he always surpassed my expectations. He may have had a grin on his face, but he was all Correcctional Officer when the need arose.
Steve's bubbly personality and infectious laugh always brightened my days at the Max. I could be guaranteed that he was going to try pulling off some prank every time he visited my office. If he had not tried I would have been disappointed.
