~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wilbur (Willie, Bill) David Wilson was born to Jack and Maggie on March 1, 1936 in Kincaid, Saskatchewan during a very cold, snowy time. He grew up on the farm with the changing moods of the Wood River. He attended Varsity School, sometimes with a horse cart, but mostly on horseback. In winter there was skating on the river, and in warmer months baseball. In grades 9 and 10 he won first place in high jump at the south Saskatchewan meet in Moose Jaw. He went to Luther College in Regina for the rest of high school. Willie began farming. His brother-in-law, Harry Mather, had an accident with a bull in Ontario, so he spent several months at Mount Forest working on their farm and helping his sister, Janet. At this time, he got to know his cousins and really enjoyed the curling. Back in the McCord area, he farmed with his father and his three brothers Jim (Elsie), Leslie (Irma), and Harold (Edith). He enjoyed spending time with and teasing all of his nieces and nephews. He did carpentry work, building two houses with Curtis Eklund.
In 1966, he married Audrey Walker and became busy with his children Stephen, Ian, Stuart, Anne, and Christina. It was a time filled with kids’ baseball and hockey, but he still was able to play some baseball, hunt deer, and curl a lot. In those years he managed the construction of a larger rink in McCord, in cooperation with Ferland. He also helped with Homecoming ’71, was on the McCord Recreation Board, and worked with others to renovate the McCord railway station to be used as a museum. The family enjoyed a few holidays including ski trips in the mountains and camping, especially at Waterton Lakes National Park.
His life changed in 1991 when he had a heart attack. Time moved on. Stephen, Ian, and nephew Gordon (Arlene) Wilson took over much of the farming, with many more cattle and acres in organic grain. Bill helped out where needed.
He and the boys liked to golf. Audrey was on the Saskatchewan Museum board, so he had some good golf games throughout the province while she was in meetings. Audrey and Bill travelled – covering areas from Victoria to Yellowknife to the Maritimes, as well as Great Britain, and Branson, MO. Bill continued with work on the farm by fixing things, doing carpentry projects and rebuilding and restoring antique trucks. He helped at the Sukanen Museum and the antique division at the Farm Progress Show in Regina as well as being on the McCord Store board. Bill was an active volunteer at the McCord Museum, and chaired the committee for the building of the McCord community park and playground. He loved spending time and teaching new skills to his grandchildren, MacKenzie (Colin), Ayden, Lowell, Rhett, Zachariah, Nathaniel, Benjamin, London, and cuddling his great-grandchildren Thorne and Hadley. In quiet times he liked crossword puzzles and reading, but he always liked a new project best. Wilbur was 90 years old and was married for 60 years. He survived several very serious health problems but the last was too difficult. He died in Moose Jaw Hospital on September 22, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Audrey, and children Stephen, Ian, Stuart (Kim) Wilson, Anne (Shawn) Hayter, Christina (Kevin) Whittmire, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. Funeral Service will be held at McCord United Church on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 2:00pm with the Reverend Janelle Shaw presiding. Following the Interment Service at the McCord Cemetery, everyone is invited to join the family in fellowship at the McCord Community Hall.
