David Earl Bates, 76, of Athens, Alabama, passed away on April 3, 2024. He was born on July 19, 1947, in Athens. David was a dedicated husband to his wife of 52 years, Diane C. Bates, a loving father to his four children, and an adoring grandfather to his ten grandchildren. He loved to spend his time in the outdoors hunting and tending to his farm, and his fall Saturdays with college football and his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide were among his favorite days. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren playing card games, where his humor and wit made memories for all who joined the fun. He was a 42 year employee of Monsanto/Solutia.
In addition to his wife Diane, he is survived by his son Tim Bates of Napa, CA, daughter-in-law Kellie Bates of Sammamish, WA, and their three children Haley, Kelsey, and Campbell; his daughter Corrie Bates and her husband Jeff Bielefeld of Forest Grove, OR, and their two sons Kris and Elliott; his son Daniel Bates and his wife Krista of Athens, and their five children Tyler, Ethan, Makenna, Canon, and Beau; and his son Drew Bates of Athens. David is also survived by his sister Vicki Jones and her husband David of The Villages, Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents Hollis O’Neal Bates and Gladys Eubanks Bates, and his brother Roger Bates.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM at McConnell Funeral Home in Athens, AL, followed by a graveside service at 2 PM at Higgins Cemetery in Athens.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in David's memory may be made to North Alabama Hospice. David will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
