Gary Morgan Thomas

Gary leaves his wife Carolyn Tiller Thomas, son James W. Thomas, sister Susan Coulter of Huntsville, nephew Jason B. Thomas and wife Rhonda of Athens, nieces Elizabeth Tidwell (Patrick), Katherine Hendrickson (Joe), Ashley Santos (David), (Brie Clark (Drew), Jennifer Harris and cousins Phillip Vaughn and Wayne Vaughn.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Idell McMahan Thomas and Walter H. “Cowboy” Thomas; as well as by his brothers H. Lavoy Thomas of Athens, W. Ronald Thomas of Huntsville, and Michael A. Thomas of Jacksonville, AR.

A graduate of Athens High School, Gary went on to complete a rigorous two-year training program with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), mastering the skills required for hydro-electric production. His dedication and expertise led him to a distinguished career as a Senior Hydro-electric Operator at Wheeler Dam. His work contributed to the region’s energy infrastructure and reflected his commitment to precision and responsibility.

Gary also served his country in the United States Army, stationed near the Korean DMZ.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gary was an enthusiastic duck hunter and an excellent duck caller. He trained two Labrador Retrievers for hunting, Sadie and Lucy, who became his trusted hunting companions. Gary also enjoyed fishing—bass and crappie in his earlier years and fly fishing for trout later in life.

His craftsmanship was another defining aspect of his life. Gary made and sold duck calls, carved wooden waterfowl, and crafted balsa wood fishing plugs.

May Gary Morgan Thomas be remembered for a life lived with dedication—to his family, to his work, to his country, and to the natural world where he spent much of his time. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

Visitation will be on January 16, 2026, at 12:00; the graveside service will be at 2:00. Doug Fields will be officiating.
