Gladys Smith was born on May 17, 1926 in Monroe, North Carolina to Arzilla and Rod L. Melton. She met and married her husband, Harold Henry Smith, there on his return from Military Service during World War ll. They moved back to Athens, Alabama to make their home. Gladys was a loving and devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. She had a great laugh that made you want to laugh along with her, loved to spend time with family, and enjoyed being out in the yard working with her flowers.
She thoroughly enjoyed trips to Walmart, Kids Mart, her favorite food and ice cream stops, or just going out riding, which her caregivers lovingly provided.
During the last few years she had wonderful caregivers/companions Amanda McCluskey, Melinda Coffman, and Gail Pack; as well as a special neighbor, Karla Barnes, that made it possible for her stay in her home, which was her wish.
She is survived by her sons, Richard Harold Smith and wife Bonnie, Alan Rod Smith and wife Mary Beth, 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Gladys passed away peacefully at her home on January 5, 2022.
Visitation will be Saturday January 8, 2022, 12:00pm until 1:00pm at McConnell Funeral Home. A chapel service will begin at 1:00pm, with Rev. Dayton Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery.
