It is with great sorrow that we to announce that Joyce Ann Splittgerber Counter went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 8, 2026. Joyce passed away peacefully at Athens Limestone Hospital, surrounded by the love and warmth of her family. We are so very grateful for a life that overflowed with a devotion to God that showed kindness and compassion, for 91 remarkable years.
Joyce was born on June 26, 1934, in Mitchell, Nebraska, the beloved daughter of the late Eldor and Esther Splittgerber, whose teachings and values shaped her into the nurturing and inspirational woman that she became. From her earliest days, Joyce exhibited a zest for life and learning, by attending 4H Congress, competing in multiple State Fairs, and graduating as Valedictorian from Albion High School in 1952. She furthered her education at the University of Nebraska, earning a B.S. degree in Vocational Education, and made lifelong friends while residing at Love Hall.
On June 2, 1957, Joyce married the love of her life, Duane Counter. Together, they shared 68 wonderful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect that endured even through life’s many trials. They were blessed with four children: Doug, Mickey, Sharon, and Julie, who will forever carry forward her legacy. Joyce was also a proud grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought overflowing joy to her life.
Joyce dedicated her career to education, initially as a teacher in York, Nebraska, then in Limestone County and Athens City Schools as a Home Economics teacher, and later she served as the Director of Athens-Limestone Clean Community (now KALB) where her leadership and commitment to environmental stewardship left an indelible mark, especially in the startup of the Recycling Center in 1981 for the community she loved so dearly.
An active member of the First Presbyterian Church on the Square for over 67 years, Joyce served as an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, and choir member, always ready to lend her voice and heart to the service of others. She was a lifetime member of Presbyterian Women and shared her love with card writing and bulletin boards full of messages of God’s love. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and fostering her generous spirit. Joyce's volunteer work extended many years to numerous organizations, including serving on the board of the United Way, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, DHR, Civitan, Girl Scouts, and Garden Club.
In her personal life, Joyce found joy in the simple pleasures of growing plants and creating beautiful flower arrangements, reflecting her love for nature and beauty. She was a wonderful cook, known for her warm and welcoming meals that gathered her family around the table. She was an avid reader and crossword enthusiast, pursuits that kept her mind sharp and active throughout her years. She cherished her time playing Bridge and engaging in intellectual pursuits with her Quest Club.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Duane; her children, Douglas Counter, Mickey (Cherie) Counter, Sharon (Thomas) Hand, and Julie (Troy) McNeese; her brother, Allan (Pat) Splittgerber; and sister-in-law, Diane Gross. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry her memory forward with love and admiration.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Joyce's life and legacy on March 22, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 112 S. Jefferson Street, Athens, AL.
