Mrs. Johnson was born May 6, 1932, in Birmingham, to James W. and Elizabeth C. Elliott. She attended Auburn University and was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. Her hobbies included photography, cooking, French hand sewing, the study of science and space, reading, gardening, painting, drawing and herb gardens.
She was a wife, mother, and grandmother with a passion for learning and knowledge. She had a loving, gentle, compassionate heart and unwavering dedication to her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband of 50 years, John William Johnson; children, Mr. and Mrs. Downs C. Spitler III (Anna Elizabeth Johnson) of Tampa, Fla., Mr. and Mrs. Andrew C. Cunningham (Laura Clayton Johnson) of Birmingham, John W. Johnson Jr. of Brentwood, Tenn., and Emily E. Johnson of Birmingham.
