

A native of Marietta, GA, Mr. Mitchell was the son of the late Albert Hoyt Mitchell Sr and Minnie Lou Hill Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, GA, received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University, and his Master’s degree from the University of Georgia. He served in the United States Navy for 28 years and retired with the rank of Captain. He commanded the U.S.S. Santa Barbara, the U.S.S. Caloosahatchee, and the U.S.S. Yellowstone and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and Navy Commendation Medal during this time. Mr. Mitchell served as an adjunct instructor at Gainesville State in Watkinsville, GA and Athens Technical College. He was a loyal Bulldog fan and a member of Athens Kiwanis Club and First Baptist Church of Athens.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Muth Mitchell; daughter, Michelle Mitchell O’Neil and husband, Michael of Haverhill, MA; son, Albert (Trey) Hoyt Mitchell III and wife, Erika of Shipman, VA; step-sons, Gregory Muth and wife, Elizabeth of Columbia, SC, C. Richard Muth of Denver, CO, and Michael A. Muth and wife, Julie of Lincolnshire, IL; sister, Mary Alice Mitchell of Mableton, GA, and 7 grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 11AM Friday, January 4th at First Baptist Church of Athens with Rev Ray Austin and Dr. Paul Baxley officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7PM Thursday, January 3rd at Bernstein Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.
