
Charlotte Hailey Brown, 79, Athens, died March 2, 2011 in her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Birmingham, AL and raised in Hartwell, GA. She was the daughter of the late Katherine McKay Hailey and William Lamar Hailey. She was a volunteer and leader in many organizations in Athens, her home for 53 years. Volunteerism ran a close second only to her love of family. She was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout troop mother, served as an officer and many times as President of the following organizations: the PTA at Alps RD Elem., Clarke Middle, Clarke Central, Clarke County PTA Council, Georgia Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, Athens Junior Assembly, YWCO, MADD, American Cancer Aux., Athens Regional Development Council, Puppet Theater, Clarke County Board of Education and was the executive director for the Foundation for Excellence in Education in Athens-Clarke County for 10 years. The Charlotte Hailey Brown Chair was established in 1999. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church where she sang in the Chancel Choir and served as Chairman of the Sanctuary Guild. She attended the University of Georgia majoring in Music Education where she joined the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and served in the Alumni Chapter, the House Corporation Board of Directors and was honored with the Evelyn Peters Kyle Angel Award in 1979. She was recognized by the Junior League of Athens with the Community Service award in 1996 for her many years of volunteerism. She also was a member of 25 other organizations.
She is survived by her devoted husband James Charles “Jim” of Athens; daughter Nancy Chenault, and her son Charles Jackson Maddox “CJ” of Athens; son Clois Julian, wife Anne Troutman, and their son Christian Alexander of Atlanta; son James Charles, Jr. “Pete”, his children James Charles III “Chase”, Mary Margaret McKay and Jeanette Parker; daughter Laura Kay of Jacksonville, FL; daughter-in-law Pamela Jo Sconyers, her daughter Jessi Cinque-Brown Herr, her husband Joshua David, children Jasper Malachi and Josephine Hailey of Asheville, NC; brother Dr. William Chenault Hailey of Atlanta and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she is preceded by her sister Nancy Winston Hailey Elson Hunt of San Diego, CA; sister-in-law Mary Louise Strickland Hailey “Sis” of Atlanta; son Lamar Hailey of Ashland City, TN; and daughter-in-law “E.A” Brown of Athens.
A memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, March 5th, at Central Presbyterian Church, 380 Alps Road. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 Friday, March 4th, at the family home.
