David Lee Slayton, a native and lifelong resident of the Athens area, passed away on January 21, 2026, at the age of 65. Born on August 20, 1960, he was the son of the late Eugene Talmadge Slayton and Sarah Annette Edwards Slayton.
David worked as an auto-body technician for numerous dealerships in Athens before opening his own body shop, establishing a respected career in the community.
In addition to his parents, he preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 40 years, Hazel "Lynn" Crowe Slayton. David is survived by his children: Jeffrey David Smith and his wife Cassy of Danielsville, Kimberly Lynn Meeler of Statham, and James Wade Meeler of Bogart. He is also survived by his brother, Gary Slayton and his wife Susan of Winterville, and his sister, Donna Wade and her husband Hudson of Saint Simons Island. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Jessica Ellington and her husband Tyler, Nathan Meeler, and Calem Robinson.
The family will receive friends Friday, January 30, from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m., at Bernstein Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 2:00 p.m., in Evergreen Memorial Park, with Rev. Jeff Wilkes officiating.
