Born on December 9, 1958, in Brooklyn, New York, Dennis grew up in New Jersey, where he developed the strong sense of family and community that would define his life. At age 15, he was granted the rare distinction of early admissions to Rutgers College (now Rowan University).
He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine, where he received the award for Highest Achievement in Medicine for a 3rd year student.
Dennis continued his medical education at Duke University completing both his Residency and Fellowship in Durham, North Carolina. He was the only Duke Resident selected for a nationally competitive Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship at the Duke University Heart Center.
After years of dedicated practice, he founded Right Relief Health where he maintained patient trust as a respected board-certified, multi-specialty physician. Always taking a “whole-person” approach, Dennis’ most recent focus was on treating individuals suffering from substance use disorders while addressing co-morbid conditions.
In 2019, he became the Medical Director at William Read Memorial Treatment Center. There, he was grateful to serve alongside colleagues and care for individuals who would forever become part of his family, continuing a life devoted to service in healthcare.
For decades, he provided compassionate, individualized care to patients facing complex challenges, earning deep respect in the community for his expertise, empathy, and unwavering commitment to improving lives.
Dennis will be fondly remembered for his infectious laugh, quick wit, ever-present smile, unique sense of humor, and steadfast loyalty to those he loved. He had a gift for making people feel seen and valued, whether in the exam room or around the family table.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Karen; his children: Amanda Brown (Wesley), Devan Doherty, Katie Hendon (Tanner) and Dennis Christopher Doherty Jr.; and his granddaughter, Hazel. He is also survived by his siblings, James Doherty, Dr. Maureen Doherty and Brian Doherty (Jennifer); his nieces, Bridget and Brooke; and his nephew Brian Jr.
A celebration of life will be held at a date and time to be announced, with details forthcoming for family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.
Bernstein Funeral Home is assisting the family.
