Jean Phillips Hunnicutt, died peacefully Tuesday, July 31, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Jean was called home one day after she and her beloved husband, Balfour celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.
Born in Athens GA, Jean was the daughter of the late Walter Cleveland Phillips and Hattie Inez Phillips and was preceded in death by her brothers, Walter Cleveland Phillips, Jr., and Dallas Leroy Phillips.
Jean and Balfour raised four daughters. She was a member of the Athens Junior Assembly, the Tuesday Morning Bridge Club and was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church where she was a good and faithful servant. Jean sang in the choir and prepared and served meals with the Holy Cookers. She worked at the University of Georgia Athletic Department as administrative secretary for former UGA Head Coach Vince Dooley during the Herschel Walker years. She also enjoyed her real estate career with Upchurch Realty. Jean felt most at peace working in her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. She was a fantastic cook and loved hosting dinner parties for family and friends.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Pendleton Balfour Hunnicutt; daughters: Barbara Crosby (Vic), Athens, Mary Cook (Hardy), Athens, Gloria Doran (Ed), Ft. Mill, SC, and Jean Massey (Dave), Rochester, NY; sister Barbara Ann Tucker, La Quinta, CA; eight grandchildren: Ashton Kiesner (Joel), George "Pen" Erwin (Brandy), Will Erwin (Leslie), Barbara Erwin (Caleb), Erin Wilson (Dan), Sarah Coursey (Jack), Zach Doran (Karyn) and Josh Massey. She is also survived by four great grandchildren, a niece, nephews, and a multitude of dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, August 4, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Father Samuel Porras officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at a reception in the church library. The interment will be private.
