J.D. “Johnny” Simmons, 92, was a resident of Clarke County for the past 89 years. He was the son of the late John Robert and Susanna Lester Simmons. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Jo Nell Hancock Simmons and sister, Virginia Barnes. He is survived by a sister, Jeanette Thompson, and his children: Joan Sims (Phil), David Simmons, Cheryl Walker (Sidney) and Rex Simmons (Tonya). GrandJohnny was blessed with 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
The family extends special thanks to Visiting Angels, St. Mary’s Hospice, as well as his 2 loving caregivers, Tracee Kisner and Joan Degnan.
He was a member Young Harris Methodist Church (YHMC) since 1954.
Johnny was a U.S. Navy Veteran during WWII, having served on the U.S.S. DeLong D. E. 684. After being discharged from the Navy in 1946, he was employed by Athens Sporting Goods until 1955, when he joined the U.S. Postal Service. After 36 years, he retired from the Post Office to spend more time with family.
The family will receive friends Sunday, December 2 from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. at Bernstein Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held following the visitation at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. David Wofford officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be the former members of the Co-Workers Sunday School class at YHMC, Agnew Peacock, Jeff Peacock, Jack Piacentini, Steve Feldner, Kenneth Williamson, and Randall Barnett.
