Stephen was not the type of person who would have agreed to an obituary, if he had a choice; his irreverent humor and iconoclasm remained strong even after Alzheimer’s Disease left him unable to verbally communicate. An author, violinist, musical composer, wood-block artist, poet, part-time Karmann Ghia mechanic, and outdoors enthusiast, Stephen crafted a lifelong appreciation for the arts and technology. He volunteered in Boise at a number of community-based organizations, and he was a known adopter of stray animals as well as people gone astray. Born in Salt Lake, UT, he moved to Idaho for junior high school. He met his future wife as a graduate student at the University of Oregon. They were married in the Netherlands, where they lived for several years before returning to Boise, ID in 1978.
Stephen and Hermine moved to Athens in 2020 to be closer to their son, and Stephen has requested that his ashes be scattered over Sahalie Falls in Oregon.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
