

Julien Devereux Weeks, 80, retired Senior Public Service Associate with the Carl E. Vinson Institute of Government, University of Georgia and active community volunteer, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Weeks was employed at the Carl Vinson Institute from 1971 until his retirement in 1995, where he specialized in local and state government law. He authored numerous handbooks and treatises, and provided training and assistance to a wide range of public officials, governmental units, and private organizations.
Weeks’s dossier of community service included Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation, Athens Land Trust, Athens Community Council on Aging, Athens Tree Commission, Bloomfield Historic District, Historic Oglethorpe County, and as Senior Warden and Vestryman of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. He also volunteered as a weekly Meals on Wheels delivery driver for over 20 years.
Born September 23, 1934, in Austin, Texas, Weeks moved to Athens in 1971, after beginning his legal career in Charlottesville, Virginia. He received his B.A. in Political Science and J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. From 1956 to 1958, Weeks served in the United States Navy as Lieutenant (J.G.). He trained at the Navy Supply Corps School, on the Normaltown campus in Athens, Georgia and served on the U.S.S. Duxbury Bay.
Weeks is survived by his wife, Gene Guthrie Weeks; his sister, Sarah Jane Hills, of St. Lambert, Quebec, Canada; his children, Janet Lynn Weeks (Phil Cohen) and David Devereux Weeks (Georgie Stout), of Brooklyn, New York, and Elizabeth Weeks Leonard (Thom Leonard) of Athens, Georgia; his grandchildren, Fenner Moody Weeks, Rae Devereux Weeks, Josiah Isaac Cohen, and Ezra Julien Leonard; and a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. There will be a reception at the church following the service, and a private burial at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Athens Land Trust, Athens Community Council on Aging, or Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation.
