

A native of Imbler, Oregon, Dr. Greene was the son of the late Homer C. Greene and Adah Hicks Greene and was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Fanne Runolfsdottir Greene. After graduating from Yakima High School, Washington in 1941, Dr. Greene served in the United States Army Intelligence during World War II, including a year in Iceland, where he met his wife, Fanne. They were married in Vancouver, Washington in 1946.
Dr. Greene completed college with degrees from the University of Oregon (BA), Stanford University (MBA), and Ohio State University (Ph.D). In 1970, Dr. Greene joined the College of Business at The University of Georgia. He served as a Distinguished Professor of Risk Management and Insurance for 18 years.
Dr. Greene was the author of seven college textbooks, ten monographs on economics and business subjects, and over fifty articles published in respected journals. He was a member of the American Risk and Insurance Association, serving as President from 1968-69. He was a member of the Board of Electors, Insurance Hall of Fame, a member of the International Insurance Seminars, the Risk and Insurance Management Society, and Southern Risk and Insurance Association. Dr. Greene was listed in the Who’s Who in America, American Men and Women of Science, and Outstanding Educators of America. He served as a consultant for the American Chemical Society, and for many business organizations. He also served the Griffiths Foundation for Insurance Education and the Geneva Association for Insurance Economics, and Gamma lota Sigma.
Among the honors and awards presented to Dr. Greene during his career was a one year fellowship to Harvard University, a Fulbright Commission travel award to Colombia, South America, and seminar leader for management in Venezuela, Trinidad, Mexico, Chile, and The Netherlands. He received the Distinguished Research Award from the University of Georgia in 1986. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to research during a career.
Dr. Greene retired from his employment with the University of Georgia in 1988, and moved to Bradenton, Florida where he continued to write and consult for many years afterwards.
Survivors include his three children, Erik Greene and wife, Jenifer of Athens, GA, Robert Greene and wife, Nadia of Greenville, SC, and Irving Greene and wife, Gisela of Ashville, NC; 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday, 2 PM in the Library at St. Mary’s Highland Hills Retirement Center.
