
Mildred Larson Reed, 90, of Athens, Georgia, died on January 10, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was born in Chillicothe, Missouri on February 18, 1920, graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri in 1941 and served as a Navy nurse during World War II. She married Cmdr. M. Joel Reed in Seattle in 1943. With their three children, they lived in many locations on both coasts and in Adak, Alaska during Cmdr. Reed’s 20-year naval career. They settled in Athens, Georgia in 1958.
Mildred is remembered as a loving, caring mother, grandmother and friend. She served as a volunteer at the Lanier Gardens retirement facility for many years.
Mildred is survived by her children: Joel Reed, Barbara Tustian and Carolyn Shannon; five grandchildren: Thomas Reed, Stephanie Tustian, Kimberly Simmons, Sean O’Brien and Kevin O’Brien; and three great-grandchildren: Madison Simmons, Finn O’Brien, and Ciaran O’Brien; sisters-in-law Margaret Reed and Laura Reed; along with many nieces and a nephew.
Graveside funeral services will be 3PM Sunday, January 16th, in Evergreen Memorial Park with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. The family will receive friends from 2pm-3PM at Bernstein.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed in her memory to the First Baptist Church of Athens,355 Pulaski Street, Athens, Georgia 30601.
