She met the love of her life, James Nicholson Hartford Jr., when he was stationed in England in 1944. She was preceded in death by her husband, and by her parents, Rosina Close Overton and Harry Rudall Overton.
She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Mahar (Jim), Linda Huggins (Jere/Harlan), and Gina Garth (Johnny) as well as five grandsons, Matthew Mahar (Christina), Andrew Mahar (Mindy) Jonathan Huggins (Samantha), Lakin Garth (Katharine) and Stuart Garth (Courtney). She was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren who knew her fondly as “Gran.”
As a young girl, she loved horses and won awards for her artwork from the Royal Drawing society. She embraced her adopted country wholeheartedly and became an active volunteer in the Athens community. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Athens, volunteering regularly there, and later joined the First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville when she moved there after her husband’s death. She also volunteered for many years at the Georgia State Botanical Garden, St. Mary’s Hospital and Recording for the Blind. She enjoyed memberships in the Embroiderers Guild of America and the Glenwood Garden Club. She outlived a wide circle of friends who loved her dearly.
Private family services will be held later this month in Athens.
