

Rex Elijah Childs, 89, passed away peacefully at home on January 14, 2011. Mr. Childs was born in Geneva County, AL on August 1, 1921 and was an Oconee County resident for over 50 years. He was a son of William E. and Calllie Ausley Childs, of Samson AL. He served in the United States Army Air Force in WWII, and graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in industrial engineering. He was a lead research engineer with the USDA and retired after 30 years of service. After retirement, he was a private consulting engineer serving the poultry industry. Over his many years in Oconee County he was active in serving his community through Oconee Little League Association, Boy Scouts, Rotary Club, Friendship Recreation Association, and the Oconee Animal Control Board. He was a loyal and devoted member of The Christian Science Church of Athens.
Mr. Childs is survived by his wife of 60 years Doris M. Childs, children, Mark and Kathy Childs of Marietta, GA, David and Lynne Childs of Milledgeville, GA, Lynda Childs Dunlap of Watkinsville, GA, Jerry and Laura Childs Ackerman of Watkinsville. He was lovingly known as “Poppi” by his nine grandchildren, Ashley Childs Green, Jennifer Childs, Morgan Dunlap, Adam Childs, William Childs, Brian Dunlap, Caulder Harvill-Childs, Nathaniel McGrath, and Erin McGrath; great grandchildren, Marley Ray and Rex Elijah Green. Also surviving are his sisters, Gladys Childs Daughtry of Fairhope, AL and Glennie Childs Hambrick and husband Jack of Sandy Springs, GA and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family gratefully acknowledges the loving care provided to Mr. Childs by Ms. Charlene Mack, his devoted caregiver for the last two years and to all the care providers of Odyssey Hospice of Athens.
Services will be held 2 PM Monday, January 17, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Benson Bottoms officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 1PM until the funeral hour at Bernstein.
