

A native of Austin, Texas, Mr. Henderson was born on February 8, 1937, and was the son of the late Raymond Haywood Henderson and the late Letha Elizabeth Stanley Henderson of Houston, Texas. He was a graduate of San Jacinto High School, Houston, Texas, and received a BBA degree in advertising from the University of Texas in 1958. In college, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and Alpha Delta Sigma professional advertising fraternity. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard.
After a 33-year career in the outdoor advertising business, Mr. Henderson retired as owner, president and CEO of Georgia Outdoor Advertising Company, Inc., in 1996. He was a past-president of the Athens Advertising Club, the Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia and past national director of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America. He was appointed to the Outdoor Advertising Association of America delegation, which worked with Congress to help draft the Highway Beautification Act of 1965.
Mr. Henderson was a member of the board of directors of the Athens Symphony from 1996 to 2014, and served as president from 2000 to 2002. He was a member of the Athens Rotary Club from 1976 to the present, and served as president from 1994 to 1995. He was a member of the State Bar of Georgia fee arbitration board in the 1980’s. He was a founder and first president of the Athens Business Council, Inc. Mr. Henderson was a member and past-chairman of the Mayor’s Committee on Employment of People With Disabilities. He was the founder of the Athens Rotary Foundation, Inc., and served as Chairman of the Clarke County Boy Scout Fund Drive in 1988. He was a member of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce from 1975 to 1996. He was a member of the Leadership Athens class of 1988-1989, and served on the Clarke County Veterans Memorial board of advisors in 1988. Mr. Henderson was a member of the Quality Growth Committee in the mid-80’s. He led the effort to establish the Spirit of Athens Monument in 1995. Mr. Henderson helped to establish the Athens-Clarke County Clean and Beautiful Commission and served as its vice-chairman, 1988-89. He served as a member of the University Round Table, the University of Georgia, 1991-92, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Athens Rotary Club in 1989. In 2005, he received the William “Billy” Hudson Distinguished Citizen Award from the NE Georgia Council, BSA. He was listed in Who’s Who in Executives & Professionals in 1995. In September of 2010, he was honored with the Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
He was a member of the Athens Touchdown Club, the Athens Country Club, the Highlands Falls Country Club, Highlands, NC, and the First United Methodist Church, Athens, GA.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Martha Dee Davison Henderson, of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Col. Garland Scott Henderson and Mary Mouritsen Henderson, of San Antonio, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Marshall Hill Henderson and Anne Foust Henderson of Athens; four grandchildren, Whitney Henderson, Austin Henderson, Sydney Henderson and Benjamin Henderson; and sisters, Carolyn Hooker Scull of Tenaha, Texas, and Linda Kellar of Smithville, Texas.
A celebration of his life will be held at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive visitors in the John Wesley Parlor following the service.
The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Athens Rotary Foundation.
