
He was born in Rome, Georgia on January 20, 1928. He was very active in many community and charity organizations. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the Marine Corps Reserves. He retired from Bell South Telephone Co. in 1987.
He was passionate about the Boy Scouts of America, the Athens Symphony of which he was past President, the University of Georgia, the Rotary Club of Athens, the Friday Lunch Bunch at Athens Country Club and the Thursday Old Men’s Club.
It was his wishes that no memorial or funeral services be held and that his body be given to the University of Georgia Medical School for research purposes.
Survivors include wife of 55 years, Margaret Strickland of Athens; sister-in-law, Betty Eckels of Athens; nephews, Jim and Martha Horner of Ft. Mill, South Carolina and Bob and Lisa Horner of Charleston, South Carolina; great-nephews, Robert and Braxton Horner of Charleston, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northeast Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 148 Boy Scout Trail, Pendergrass, Georgia 30567; the Athens Symphony, P.O. Box 5244, Athens, Georgia 30604; the University of Georgia Athletic Association, P.O. Box 1472, Athens, Georgia 30603; or a charity of choice.
