

Thurmond was born on December 11, 1940, in Danielsville, Georgia to Kato and Elnora Alewine. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wilma Minish Alewine, their daughters: Chris McDonald (Todd), Amy Luckey (Dale), and Alison Cearley (Tim), and grandchildren: Morgan Germ (Brian), Collin McDonald (Ashleigh), Lauren Rafala (Daniel), Graham Luckey, Alayna Cearley, Abby Cearley, four great-grandsons; nieces: Dianne Carnes (Shelley) and Carol Dunn (Ricky). He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters: Norine Warren and Catherine Alewine. After graduating Athens High School in 1958, Thurmond joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He owned and operated Classic Auto Service Center in Athens, Georgia for approximately forty years. He was a faithful follower of Christ and was a member and deacon of Central Baptist Church in Athens, Georgia.
A celebration of Thurmond’s life will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., at Bernstein Funeral Home, 3195 Atlanta Hwy., Athens, Georgia. The family will receive loved ones and friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Thurmond to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
The family extends gratitude for the exceptional personal care of Thurmond by the dedicated staff of the Veterans Association, Bristol Hospice and Always Caring.
