A native of Athens, Mr. Neighbors was born on July 9, 1947, the son of Dr. Joseph Britton Neighbors, Jr. and Mary Cobb Erwin Neighbors. Alex attended Barrow School, was a Little Leaguer and was one of Kelley’s boys at Athens Y. He was a 1965 graduate of Athens High School. Alex was a fine athlete, excelling in baseball. He graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
On March 14, 1970 he and Jacquolyn Wing were married, and the devoted couple recently celebrated their 49th anniversary. Mr. Neighbors is survived by his wife; a daughter, Kathryn Wing Neighbors; and a son, William Alexander Neighbors, Jr., his wife Denise; and two adored grandchildren, Luke Anthony and Lucy Emerson Neighbors. He is also survived by two older brothers; Joseph Britton Neighbors III and his wife, Lois, and Andrew Erwin Neighbors and his wife, Gay.
Mr. Neighbors had a long and successful career with Ivey, with Lend Lease and with Paccar Financial, commercial vehicle leasing companies, in Athens, Columbus, Ohio and Atlanta. He was respected for his business acumen as well as for his generous nature, gregarious spirit and hearty sense of humor. He was all through his life a rabid supporter of his Georgia Bulldogs. Among his favorite places on earth was “Wrong Lot,” the old Neighbors house in the North Georgia Mountains on Lake Burton. A wonderful, easy host, Alex was always happiest surrounded by his family and many friends who treasured his good-heartedness.
Mr. Neighbors was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
Services will be at Bernstein Funeral Home of Athens on Saturday, April 20. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, with a service in the chapel immediately following.
