Cheryl Jean Mitchell

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Iva Jean (Roberts) Mitchell and Wylie Mitchell, and by her sister, Sandra Wylene Mitchell Whiting.

Cheryl graduated from Sylvan Hills High School in Atlanta in 1965 and earned an A.B. degree from Georgia State University. She later attended Brown College of Court Reporting, completing night classes, and received her Georgia State Certification as a Court Reporter in 1988.

Her professional career reflected a lifetime of public service. Cheryl was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Atlanta, from 1966 to 1969. In 1969, she joined the Georgia Attorney General’s Office under Attorney General Arthur K. Bolton. She dedicated 35 years of service to the State of Georgia and retired in 2003, having served under Attorneys General Arthur K. Bolton, Michael J. Bowers, and Thurbert Baker.

Cheryl was a devoted member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, where she participated in numerous Sunday School classes over the years. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Women’s Good News Circle and served on the PW Board. Cheryl was also a member of Who’s Who of Atlanta Singles, serving as a board member for three years, as well as the Black Tie Club of Atlanta and the Assistance League of Atlanta (ALA).

She generously gave her time as a volunteer with Sunrise Assisted Living, the Georgia Avenue Outreach Program, and Meals on Wheels.

Cheryl is survived by her estranged sister, Beverly Ann Mitchell Bowers; her nieces, Lori Whiting Swink and Robin Lorraine Whiting Jo, and Robin’s son, Skylar Gwin; her best friend, Judith McSwain Eckles; her goddaughter, Rebecca Eckles; and many cherished friends.

Visitation will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill, located at 4550 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30319, on February 11, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

The funeral service will take place at the same venue on February 12, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Following the funeral service, a committal service will be held at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mount Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
