George grew up in Macon, where he was a boy scout and earned the rank of Eagle Scout, reflecting his lifelong devotion to family, faith, and community. He graduated from Lanier High School, Class of 1950.
George majored in Economics at Mercer University, graduating in 1954. He participated in ROTC and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Army Finance Corps from 1954-1956. After graduating from Mercer and serving in the Army, he entered the newly developed MBA program at Emory University.
After receiving his MBA in 1957, George joined the training program at the Trust Company of Georgia (later renamed SunTrust Bank and currently Truist Bank). He remained with the bank for his entire career, working as manager for the West End branch in Atlanta, and subsequently in commercial real estate at the bank headquarters in downtown Atlanta. George retired from SunTrust in 1995.
George married Mary Janet Turner in 1965. The two celebrated 56 years together this past June. They enjoyed gardening, home improvement projects, and antiquing together. After retirement, George and Mary Janet enjoyed traveling, especially to visit their children, grandchildren, and extended family. Trips to Disneyland every two years offered regular opportunities for Lumpkin family reunions. The highlight was always George reading the bedtime stories to the grandchildren. He was a prolific reader.
George was a proud member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church where he rarely missed a service, even in virtual covid times. He was an example to his family and friends, always exemplifying integrity and industry both at work and at home.
He is survived by his wife, sons George White Lumpkin, Jr. (Miranda) of San Francisco, CA, and Christopher Turner Lumpkin (Megan) of Dallas, TX, and grandchildren Marissa Lee Lumpkin, William Mason Lumpkin, Mia Caroline Lumpkin, and Genevieve (Evie) Michele Lumpkin. He was predeceased by sister Betty Lumpkin Henderson and brother-in-law Charles Kendrick Henderson, both of Atlanta.
A memorial service will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church at 3180 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30305 on Saturday, October 30 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.
