Jane Morris Munnerlyn Carter

Jane Morris Munnerlyn was born January 15th, 1929 in Jacksonville, Florida to Margaret Springs Munnerlyn and Benjamin Munnerlyn. She was raised in Ortega and attended the Bartram School for girls in Jacksonville and later attended Sweetbriar College. On June 25th, 1949 she married the love of her life the late Frank Carter Jr. (Papa) in Jacksonville, Florida. She is predeceased by her mother, Margaret Springs, her father, Benjamin Munnerlyn, her sister Margaret Munnerlyn Haverty and her husband Frank Carter Jr.

She is survived by her children Frank Carter III (Amie Simms), Ben M. Carter (Tricia Reed), Wilson M. Carter and Jane Carter Bishop (Dr. Andrew R. Bishop). Her grandchildren, Frank IV (Louisa Carter), Anne Marie Carter and Daniel Carter, Palmer Carter Stratton (Douglas Stratton), Benjamin Carter Jr., Bailey Carter and Mary Wilson Carter, Carter Ware, Harry Ware and Janie Ware.

Gran, as her children and grandchildren knew her, was an adoring mother and grandmother. Family and education were her greatest priorities and her generosity extended to many individuals and organizations.

She gave the The Rose Window in the First Presbyterian Church in memory of her beloved husband Frank Carter Jr. Among her educational endowments are: The Frank Carter Leadership Scholarship at The Lovett School; The Jane Carter Scholarship at Sweetbriar College; the Carter Real Estate Center at College of Charleston and the Environmental Humanities Education Center Artist Residency in Centennial Valley, Montana. She also donated to the Hill School in Middleburg, Virginia and Athens Academy in Athens, Georgia. She served as a board member at Middleton Place in Charleston, South Carolina, which was dear to her heart as part of her family ancestry.

Her many contributions also included: The Morgan County Conservancy and the Madison Morgan Cultural Center. She was a member of the Forward Arts Foundation, the Peachtree Golf Club and the Piedmont Driving Club.

Her greatest pleasure in life was to gather her family together and mark the celebration of important holidays such as the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. At every gathering she handed out sheet music to her favorite hymns and patriotic songs. Everyone was required to sing. Gran loved to be with her family and friends at Willow Oak Farm in Madison, Georgia and her home in Ponte Vedra Beach. She was a loyal friend to many in Atlanta and played tennis and bridge throughout her life.

Visitation will be held this Thursday, August 22nd from 5 until 7 O’clock at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill, 1020 Spring Street, NW, Atlanta.

Memorial services will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 1328 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta at 11 O’clock this Friday the 23rd of August. Graveside service will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mount Vernon Highway, Atlanta. There will be a reception at her home to follow.
