Joan M. Tiernan, Ph.D, 60, of Atlanta, died May 15, 2011 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was a loving wife, mother, talented teacher and excellent role model. Dr. Tiernan received her Ph.D in 2000. She taught 7th and 8th grade math and was principal with Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School. She retired after 27 years of dedicated service. Survivors include her husband, Jim; children, Jamie, Jennifer and Jonathan; grandchildren, Sean, Harrison, Cate and Murphy; brother and sisters, Susan, Theresa and Tim. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, May 18th at 2 o’clock at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Joan M. Tiernan Scholarship Fund, 1350 Hearst Drive, Atlanta, Georgia, 30319. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 to 8 and Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 with a rosary at 6 at H.M.
