John Louis Brooks, age 81, went to live with God on Oct. 6, 2010. A native of Decatur, GA, John was born on Nov. 7, 1928 to Eugene A. Brooks and Zaretta E. Brooks (deceased). John leaves behind a loving family: his wife, Carolyn S. Brooks; children, Susan Brooks Bryant (Tom), John L. Brooks, Jr. (Karen), and Elizabeth Brooks; and grandchildren, Annalise Bryant, Katie Bryant, Louis Brooks, Jordan Brooks, Eric Brooks, and Sam Bryant. He is also survived by his sister, Mary B. Garner and several nieces and nephews.
John was a graduate of Boys High School and later received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech, where he was an active member of the ATO fraternity. He served his country as an Ensign in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and shortly after began working for Boiler Equipment Company. John spent the major portion of his career as a public servant for DeKalb County as the Director for Economic Development. John and Carolyn have spent the last two years at Park Springs Retirement Community in Stone Mountain where John enjoyed many friendships on the Petanque court, singing with the BarberShoppers, and in the Park Springs Chorus. However, his first love was his wife and family who will always remember and cherish his genuine caring nature, loyalty, and keen sense of humor.
John was an avid golfer, loved camping and the outdoors, and he and Carolyn achieved their own goal of camping and hiking in 47 of the US National Parks. John was an active member of Decatur Presbyterian Church and enjoyed singing in the church choir, not only at Decatur Presbyterian but in other local Presbyterian church choirs for over 50 years.
The family and close friends will gather for a graveside service at Arlington Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 9, 2010, and invites you to join them in celebration of John’s life at a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. at Decatur Presbyterian Church, 205 Sycamore St., Decatur, GA 30030. Following the service, guests are invited to greet the family at a reception in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in his memory may be made to the Organ Fund at Decatur Presbyterian Church (see above for address).
