

John A. Thames, age 72, of Atlanta, GA died April 28, 2015. He graduated from Vanderbilt University, and received his master’s degree from Teachers College at Columbia University and his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. In Atlanta, John was the Director of ELS Language Center, then Dean of Students (1977-1984) and Dean of Continuing Education (1984-1997) at Oglethorpe University. Following Oglethorpe, John was active in the Atlanta elder care community, including the Atlanta chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and the Center for Positive Aging. For many years John also taught U.S Citizenship classes and ESL (English as a Second Language) at the Brookhaven Public Library. He was also an active participant in a wide range of community organizations including the Atlanta Rotary Club, Atlanta Unicef Board (including serving as President), Literacy Volunteers and Toastmasters. John was also a world traveler, including participating in several cultural exchange programs. Mr. Thames was a lifelong educator whose greatest joys were teaching, learning and helping others. John is survived by his wife, Frederica; daughter Ginger Bessonette (John); grandchildren Anna and Jack Bessonette; nieces Gail Huffstutler, Peggy Caudell (Glenn), Lee L. Scott (Tim); great-nieces, Sidney Caudell and Ellen Scott; and great -nephews, Griffin Caudell and Jim Scott. The memorial service will be held Saturday, May 2 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill, 4550 Peachtree Road, Brookhaven, Georgia 30319. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John's life. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
