Born on September 1, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, Julie was the beloved daughter of Julianne Singer Hancock and Edwin Reginald Hancock, and the cherished sister of Shelley Hancock MacMillan. She grew up in Atlanta, attending Morris Brandon Elementary School, Northside High School, and The Lovett School, where she graduated in 1969.
Julie went on to attend the University of Georgia, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1973 and a Master’s degree in Speech Education in 1974. During her college years, she was a proud member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority (AOII).
Following her studies, Julie married Lance Miller Braden and spent a year living in Marlow-on-Thames, England, before returning to Atlanta to teach elementary school at The Village School in Vinings. In 1979, she married Arthur Timothy Jones, and together they welcomed their son, Timothy Reginald Jones, in 1981. Julie devoted herself to her family as a full-time homemaker and mother. In 1998, she married Richard Scott Colbert, and the two made their home in Paris, France, before returning to Atlanta in 2018.
Julie was deeply involved in her community, giving generously of her time and heart. She was an active member of the Junior League of Atlanta, where she served for many years at the Nearly New store, and she volunteered with the American Red Cross, serving as both an organizer and platelet donor.
An animal lover and supporter of the ASPCA, Julie also found great joy in reading and playing bridge. Julie’s infectious joie de vivre and delightful sense of humor made every gathering brighter. She had a gift for friendship - those who knew her often said that “Julie made lifelong friends wherever she went."
Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Sis and Reg Hancock, and her husband, Richard Scott Colbert. She is survived by her son, Timothy Reginald (Ellen Louise) Jones; her beloved grandchildren, Elise Singer Jones and Gifford Reginald Jones; her sister, Shelley Hancock MacMillan; and nephews, Justin Hancock Johnson and Richard Tennyson Johnson.
Flowers may be sent to H.M. Patterson & Son, where they will be shared with the nurses, care team, and residents of Peachtree Hills Terrace. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the ASPCA in Julie’s honor.
