Our dear mother, Lou Corbin Selles of Atlanta passed away on October 3, 2022. She was born on February 26, 1935 to Floyd A. Corbin and Laura Mae Jackson of Tucker, Georgia. Lou graduated from Lilburn High School and attended Georgia State University.
In 1962, Lou married the love of her life, Carlos E. (“Rick”) Selles, who was then Honorary Consul of Panama in Atlanta. In 1966, Lou and Rick moved to Guatemala City, Guatemala where they owned and operated a successful company for 35 years – she even learned to speak Spanish. A devoted mother, wife and business partner, Lou enjoyed oil painting and supporting charities. She donated her favorite painting, a depiction of beautiful lake Atitlán, to a local orphanage which displayed it in its lobby for many years.
An avid genealogy buff later in life, Lou was surprised to find a north-south connection in her family tree. Her northern roots were traced back to 1769 Sheffield County, Massachusetts, where her ancestors settled after migrating from England. Her southern lineage hailed from Gwinnett County and in 2004, Lou was recognized by the Gwinnett Historical Society as a proven descendant of three early settlers prior to 1850 - the “First Families of Gwinnett”.
An elegant lady with a cheerful demeanor, Lou was a caring person who strived to treat everyone with compassion and respect. Simple pleasures late in life included watching her beloved Golden State Warriors play, Steph Curry in particular, and Hallmark movies. She also loved getting her nails done, listening to Elvis and indulging in key lime pie, her favorite dessert. Even in the face of long-term health challenges, Lou always looked on the bright side of life with faith and courage. She is preceded in death by Rick, her beloved husband of 45 years, and survived by her loving and devoted daughter Marilyn and son Kent. Our mother is an example of a life well lived - she will live on in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, Lou’s wishes were for donations to be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) and Atlanta Mission (atlantamission.org). A graveside service will be held at Arlington Memorial Park on Friday, October 7th, 2022 at 3 p.m.
