

Mary Ruth Womack (née Ellis), aged 96, passed away on October 17, 2024, in Cumming, Georgia. Born on February 6, 1928, in Rhea County, Tennessee, Mary led a fulfilling life marked by her dedication to education and her family.
Mary's journey of lifelong learning began at Spring City Elementary School, progressed through Spring City High School, and culminated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master's degree from the University of Tennessee and a Specialist degree from Auburn University. Her professional career spanned over four decades, starting in 1949 as a home economics, health, and physical education teacher in Rhea and Roane County Schools, Tennessee. In 1961, after relocating to Atlanta, she continued her vocation in the Atlanta Public Schools, later advancing to serve as a resource teacher and eventually retiring as the health and physical education coordinator for the school system in 1989.
Beyond her professional commitments, Mary was a faithful member of Saint James United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA. Her life was rich with personal interests including travel, golf, tennis, cooking, and the arts, with a particular fondness for theater, music, and dance. Above all, Mary cherished times spent with her family, and her home was often filled with the laughter and love of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to honor Mary's life will be held at 12 PM on November 9, 2024 at H.M Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel. Mary is survived by her daughter Sue, her sons Mark and Scott, her grandchildren Kristen, Tyler, Mason, Will, Josiah, and Samuel, as well as her great-grandchildren Ace, Charlotte, A.J., and Ellis.
