

Minnie Echols Black, age 96 of Atlanta, died Sunday, January 13, 2013. She worked many years as an executive secretary at Mutual Life Insurance Co. as well as working with her husband in the estate furniture and appraisal business. After her husband’s death in 1970, she took driving lessons and returned to Georgia State University achieving her Masters and her PhD. In the Winter 2008 Alumni Magazine for Georgia State, Mrs. Black was recognized as receiving more diplomas (six in total) than any other alumni. She taught business courses for many years at Henry Grady High School. Minnie Black was a member for many years at First Baptist Church of Atlanta, and at the time of her death was a member of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Riddick Black, her parents William Arthur and Minnie Tolbert Echols, and her brothers, John Echols, Charles Echols, and sisters, Sarah Echols Bush, and Frances Echols. Mrs. Black is survived by nieces and nephews, Linda Sue Bush Houze (Ronald), Dameron Black III (Jane), Kitty Black Diefenbach (Kurt), Charles William Echols Jr. (Susan), Sandra Echols Crane, Arthur Echols (Susan), James Monroe Black, William Riddick Black (Brenda), Janice Black Jones (Lee), and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral service for Mrs. Black will be Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Eleven O’clock in the morning in the Swilley Chapel of the Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Dr. Charles Qualls officiating, with interment to follow at Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
