

Ray was born in Barnesville, Ohio to Ray King Chalfant, Sr., and Margaret Shaw Chalfant on August 27, 1920. Ray graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terra Haute, Indiana in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree. Following active duty in the U. S. Army at Ft. St. John, British Columbia building the Alcan Highway as an overland route between Alaska and the forty-eight contiguous states, Ray attended Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut earning a Master of Engineering degree in 1947. He taught while studying for his degree and spent a year after graduation teaching full time at Yale. From
1948-1955 Ray taught structures, surveying, fluid mechanics, highway engineering, and concrete, structural and steel design at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Ray worked in Atlanta with Prestressed Concrete of Georgia until he opened an office in Brookhaven as Ray K. Chalfant, Jr. Consulting Engineer from 1960 - 2016.
Ray was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army. He was also in the U. S. Army Reserves, Advance Engineering School serving as teacher and instructor. His rank at retirement was Lieutenant Colonel.
Ray was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) which began at Rose-Hulman, continued as the faculty advisor of the Student Chapter of ASCE at Georgia
Tech followed by involvement during his private practice. In 1982 Ray served as Vice President of the Georgia Section of ASCE, and for the 1983-84 term, he served as President. From
1988-90 he served on the National ASCE Board of Directors.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Ray King Chalfant, Sr. and Margaret Shaw Chalfant; his sister, Elizabeth Chalfant Turner; brother, Joseph S. Chalfant, and mother of his children, Allene W. Chalfant.
Ray is survived by daughter, Karen Chalfant Wray and her husband Jack of Savannah GA; son, Ray King Chalfant III of Carlton GA; daughter, Melanie Chalfant Romano and her husband Rick of Birmingham AL, and son, Todd Westbrook Chalfant and his wife Tonya of Atlanta GA; six grandchildren: Derek Wray (Mary), Michelle Lee (Bobby), Ryan Romano, Caroline Stevens (Trey), Scott Chalfant (Lisa), Leah Chalfant; and four great grandchildren: Nathan Wray, Nolan Wray, Crawford Lee, Georgia Lee.
Ray’s children are thankful for the many wonderful friendships that were bestowed upon Ray both professionally and socially in his lifetime. More importantly, his children were blessed and appreciative of his loving, caring, giving, and, at times, forgiving, tenderness and wisdom he showed them as their father. His touch will be missed.
The family extends their sincere thanks to Marci and Bill Smith, who had an ongoing, close relationship many years with Ray. Also, our thanks to Yvette Rivera for years of quality caregiving.
The Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, July 18, 2020 at H. M. Patterson and Son - Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, Brookhaven, Georgia, followed by a Reception from 3:00 - 4:30 pm. Burial will be a private service at a later time.
