Born on February 16, 1955, Sally Repsher Crooks-Holst rose from Earthly life on September 1, 2020 after an all-too-short lifetime of lifting others as an uncommon Mother, Artist, Philanthropist, Friend, and Filmmaker.
Sally was raised in Meridian, Mississippi, graduated from Lamar High School and the Atlanta College of Art. She was an uncompromising Artist with an unmatched creative vision, whose photographic work received widespread acclaim, appearing in selected exhibitions, galleries and private collections across the United States.
Sally’s philanthropic works filled her soul and lifted up so many whom society left behind. Not content to simply make donations, Sally above all wanted to make a difference. In that vein, she was the Founder of Hannah’s Heart, a disaster relief foundation, and supported a variety of charitable causes through her Voices of Hope Foundation. Sally produced two highly awarded documentary films, Heist: Who Stole the American Dream? which was a New York Times Critic’s Pick and The Long Shadow which is currently airing on PBS.
Sally found hope, renewal, inspiration & fellowship in 12-step programs, particularly through AA.
Though she left an indelible imprint on the world, it was her daughter, Hannah, who was her “greatest legacy,” whom she adored and treasured the most. Sally’s creativity, her laughter, her gift for living life to the fullest, and most of all, her passion to be of service to those in need will live on through all she touched.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Saramel Repsher Crooks and William Battle Crooks. She is survived by her daughter, Hannah Knighton Holst; her sister, Mel Crooks Evans and husband, John Evans; niece, Saramel Evans; nephew, Austin Evans and his wife, Laura and their children.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hannah’s Heart for disaster relief on the charity’s Facebook page where there is a Paypal link or to a charity of your choice.
Memorial services in Atlanta and Meridian will be announced in the coming days.
