Sybil was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Jones, who she married 60 years ago. Sybil’s unwavering dedication to David, who served as President and CEO of Atlanta Gaslight Company, saw them moving throughout Georgia and traveling around the world, experiencing new places and cultures together. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Furman Norris, a respected Methodist preacher.
Sybil grew up in Thomson, Georgia, as the daughter of Sheriff Lynn and Dorothy Norris. She and her family lived in the apartment above the jail, where she learned resilience and compassion from a young age. After college, she became a high school teacher, sharing her knowledge in typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping with countless students over the years.
Sybil was the proud mother of two daughters and their husbands, Jenny & Jim Catoe and Ashley & Mike Mays, and she adored her four grandchildren: Caden, Austin, Sarah, and Haley. She loved nothing more than taking the kids to the mall and to Chick-fil-A. She was also a wonderful cook, with family meals becoming cherished memories. Everyone especially loved her sour cream pound cake.
One of her favorite stories she often repeated was about her time in the retirement home, a story from her imagination. According to Sybil, the food was terrible—until she arrived. With her southern charm, she
brought her own recipes into the kitchen and taught the staff how to cook properly. From that point on, mealtime improved greatly, much to her delight.
Sybil loved her chihuahua, Buddy, and her stray cat, Miss Kitty, both of whom brought her much joy and companionship. She also delighted in feeding the birds behind their home on the Chattahoochee River, pastime that David affectionately referred to as her time spent on “the farm.”
Sybil will be deeply missed, but her memory will continue to inspire and bring warmth to the lives of those she touched. A viewing and memorial service will be held at H.M. Patterson & Sons to honor her full life. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local Humane Society.
