Walt was a proud father, doting grandfather, loving husband, motivational coach, trustworthy boss and loyal friend and will be missed by many who were blessed to know him.
Walt was born in Fitzgerald, GA to Frank and Onabee Lemming on May 14, 1946. He grew up in south Atlanta and went to Southwest High School and attended West Georgia College. He married Nancy Lemming on January 16, 2010 in Atlanta, GA. He was the owner and President of Hardegree Insurance Agency from 1980, taking over ownership after the passing of his father-in-law, Jack Hardegree, father of his first wife, Charleen Long. He served in the Army Reserves in the 1970’s.
Walt was preceded in death by his father Frank, mother Onabee, sister Frances (Sissy) and brother Joel. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, daughter Jennifer, son Judd (Carrie), grandchildren Tripp, Griffin, Sadie and Cade, his step-children Kristin Butler, Renee Leasure (Mike), grandchildren Matthew and Christopher, mother-in-law Charlsie Cannon Hardegree, the Kimsey, Hardegree and Cannon extended families and many lifelong friends who were also family.
Walt had a larger-than-life presence and many interests and hobbies including vintage cars, Harley Davidson motorcycles, skeet shooting, and trains. He was a steadfast friend and remained close with childhood and new friends as well as colleagues from the insurance industry. He coached his children’s football and softball teams and inspired resilience, independence, authenticity and compassion. He was happiest surrounded by his grandchildren, playing checkers, chess, tic-tac-toe, racing matchbox cars and having afternoon tea, if the occasion called for it.
