

William (Bill) H. Shaw Jr., of Sandy Springs died Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Emory Hospital of complications from congestive heart failure. The body was cremated. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 14th 11 o’clock at Dunwoody United Methodist Church with a reception to follow the service. Interment will be in Peterson family cemetery in Ailey GA later. Born on Feb. 24, 1938 in Raleigh NC to Dr. William H Shaw Sr. and Mary Louise Carlton Shaw, he grew up in Columbus GA and was educated at Columbus HS and UGA where he had a football scholarship and was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. On June 25, 1961 he married Nancy Peterson of Ailey, a union that lasted 49 years. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Carlton Reed Shaw, his son Charles Hugh Shaw, and a newborn Elizabeth Grace Shaw. Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Colonel W. H. Shaw III of Colorado Springs CO and Glenn Hendricks Shaw (Kristin) of Atlanta, mother-in-Law Grace Peterson of Ailey, brother-in-Law W. H. Peterson Jr. of Rockville MD, sister-in-Law Cilla Shaw Watson (David) of Pine Mountain GA, nephew Reed Shaw and niece Katherine Shaw Trussell (George) and three great nephews of Columbus GA. He particularly loved and enjoyed his grandchildren, Bailey Grace and Shannon Elizabeth Shaw of Colorado Springs, and Ala Kenny and Clark Hendricks Shaw of Atlanta. In 1974 Bill graduated from the College of Financial Planners in Denver CO. In 1977 he became president of Shaw & Baugh, Inc., financial consultants, where he developed real estate until his retirement. An avid sportsman he enjoyed hunting, boating, and making BBQ dinners for family and friends. He was a member of DUMC and an enthusiastic Pop Warner coach. A past president of N Atlanta Rotary Club, he was a Paul Harris and Will Watt Fellow who maintained a perfect attendance record for 34 years. As a philanthropist, he created the Ligon Foundation in memory of long time neighbors Gerald and Blanche Ligon to fund annual scholarships and fellowships for students seeking special education degrees at Auburn University, Columbus State College and University, Wesleyan College, and Emory University. His vision to help children overcome disabilities, particularly autism, will be continued by his family. Among countless blessings and medical miracles in the past 15 years, Bill was especially grateful for receiving his LVAD (heart pump) at Emory Hospital in May 2009, a surgery which greatly improved his quality and enjoyment of life.
