On Monday, January 17, 2022, Mr. Burl Lamar Nance passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus at home with his wife of 63 years, Carolyn Bragg Nance, by his side. Burl was the first of nine children born to Ernie Lamar Nance and Dorothy Noah Nance of Whorton Bend. He was part of the 1957 graduating class of Emma Sansom High School. Following graduation, Burl married his sweetheart, Carolyn
Bragg, on November 26, 1958. Burl began his working life with Brown’s Grocery, followed by a few years at the Gadsden Water Department. In 1964 he began work at the Goodyear Tire Company, where he retired in 1999 after 35 years of service. After his retirement, he spent 10 years as a Gadsden City Trolley and DART driver. After his salvation, Burl was a devoted follower of Christ who tirelessly and humbly served Malone Baptist Church and his community for the last 60 years of his life. He served as a deacon for 50 of those years. Aside from serving as a deacon, Burl was also the Sunday School Superintendent, led the church bus ministry, and helped organize the Happy Hearts Senior Adult ministry.
When not working or serving in the church, Burl’s greatest enjoyment came from traveling the southeast supporting his grandchildren in all their endeavors. To honor Burl’s legacy of love for his savior, church, and his family we ask that each of you commit time to serve your church and community as he served his. The family would like to thank neighbor, friend, and retired paramedic Stan Clayton for his assistance to Carolyn in Burl’s final moments at home. We would also like to express our gratitude to Burl’s oncologist Dr. Kelly Godby and nurse Leticia Deramus at UAB.
