Most of Doug's friends can tell stories about that concert they went to with Doug, or that camping trip they went on, or THAT ONE NIGHT!! (That nobody really remembers). As much as I wish I had a few more of those type of stories, my experiences with Doug were quite different.
I got to see Doug at his realist. The whip making/trick master, from scratch cooking, pop-up drawing Doug. I hung out with Doug every single day during his stay at our house and loved every minute of it. He was by far the smartest, most intelligent person that I have ever met. He is probably the biggest reason that I graduated school this year. He would help me take my online tests for Anthropology 1 and 2, plus Astronomy. We always got a B or better on every test and he almost never had to open the book to search out the answer. It was common sense knowledge to Doug, but he never judged or made me feel stupid like a true friend. He was often a better friend to me than some of my best friends. 
A typical day with Doug would consist of multiple cooking shows followed by a gourmet meal of his own, and of course drawing on his white sheet paper with a few crappy kung-fu movies sprinkled in between. We must have watched 1,000's of hours of kung-fu. That was our thing Sunday was our favorite day of the week though. It was the only day he would set an alarm to get up and watch seven straight hours of commercial free football with me starting at 10 am. Throughout any given day, I would pick his brain with all kinds of questions like who was his favorite candidate for the upcoming election, or what the Iran Deal is, or whether or not he saw the new kung-fu movie just released on tv. The only time I could stump him was when I asked if this chicken is cooked all the way through, knowing that he was color blind and couldn't tell if it was too pink still. Regardless of the question, I always got a professor like answer. I still come home with loads of questions that I know Doug would have the most remarkable answers for
I'm torn that he is gone, but I'm blessed to have had Doug in my life at all. I also know that he let me into his life more than most and that means the world to me. Doug became more than my friend, he became my brother. It's always hard to lose family. Fortunately, I know he is waiting for us in heaven. Until then, Rest in peace brother.

My favorite experience with Doug was when we went golfing about four years ago.  This is the one and only time I was able to play golf with Doug, so it was a very memorable and special round of golf for me. There were four of us; Doug, Adam Lind, Matt Miller and myself.  We met early afternoon in the parking lot of Turkey Creek and preceded to play 18 holes at the course Doug played on while he was a member of the Del Oro Golf Team.  I remember Doug was an excellent golfer with great form and consistent results, while the rest of us were spraying golf balls all over the course trying to keep up with him.   Doug  never bragged about his shots or gave ridicule for the horrific shots that were happening around him.  He just quietly played his round while offering his praise to us when we finally hit a good shot or putt.  Looking back, Doug played golf the way he went through life with quiet dignity and respect never drawing attention to himself but rather transfering attention and praise to others. 
 The moment I will never forget was when we were on the back nine of Turkey Creek in the furthest section of the course surrounded by thick vegetation.  We finished up on hole 14 or 15, Doug and Matt climbed into their cart while Adam and myself were in the cart behind them.  I would like to make it clear that Adam was driving our cart and Matt Miller was driving the other cart.  The next hole is a long cart drive through a wooded area with multiple paths. As we headed down the cement path to the next hole Matt begins to floor his cart down a parallel path to the cement path intended for the carts.  Adam quickly hits the gas and shoots Matt a look as they tear down the path as if it were a race with money going to the winner.  Doug and myself were at the mercy of Matt and Adam as the passengers of the carts.  I soon realize that Matt and Doug's path would soon be merging back with the original cement path we were currently speeding down.  We were neck and neck with the other cart and someone was going to need to slow down to avoid a collision.  At the last second, Adam eased up on the gas pedal and allowed Matt to merge at the nick of time to avoid disasters. However, Matt shouted a celebratory comment to Adam which he was not too happy about and Adam immediately hit the gas and plowed right into the right back corner of Matt and Doug's' cart.  This simple but effective maneuver quickly pushed Matt and Doug's cart sideways and promptly sent them flying out of the cart which slammed onto its side sending the roof and GPS system tumbling down the cart path.  Golf balls, tees, beers were all over rolling down the cart path.  Matt immediately comes up irate but more shocked and had a few choice words with Adam.  Doug simply stood up, commented on how that hurt his shoulder, then calmly started to gather the miscellaneous items that had been thrown from the cart.  This is the moment  when I realized how much patience Doug had with his friends and anyone around him.  Most people, including myself, would have the right to be very angry in this situation and would be justified to scream and yell at the offender.  Doug was not like most people, Doug had skills I could only hope to have when it comes to patience and controlling emotions.  I learned many things about Doug during our only time golfing together.  I wish I had played more golf with Doug while I had the chance, however, I know I will be golfing with him again when I am called home.

For Doug Holt, The Wasp,

We have known Doug for over 15 years. Austin met him freshman year at Del Oro HS. I can tell you he was a polite, quiet and handsome young man. He came to our home several times. We got to know Julie and Stan a little and could see he had a loving and caring family. I know he had fun in high school because he was on the golf team with Matt, who, I'm sure, could share a few funny stories himself.

Doug quietly went about his business with school, college routines at Sac State, apartment living in Chico and developing his artistic talent of sketching, drawing and doodling. His friends valued his uniqueness, appreciated his talents and allowed Doug to be himself with no judgments.

Here's a little memory I have of Doug I'd like to share:  It started off with Pete sharing a cookbook with Austin. The book really focused on the chemistry of cooking and putting recipes together. Austin took the book home and Doug picked it up and loved it. Doug was really smart. He read it cover to cover over a weekend. Then, I heard he shared the book with his dad. One day this past summer, I stopped in at the house in Roseville for one reason or another. Austin and I were talking on the back patio and Doug got off the couch to show me his herb and vegetable garden he planted. I was touched to have Doug share his success in gardening; he was Biology major, after all.  He was happy to tell me of his love of gardening and said he enjoyed cooking, too.  Austin, Leih and Danny can attest: Doug was a really good cook! I suggested to him that he ought to consider becoming a chef. He just smiled and basically blew me off. But I really thought that might be something he'd enjoy.

If I can paraphrase Ron Swanson, he said something like: friendship doesn't know geography, it doesn't matter if you are near or far. We keep friends in our hearts no matter the distance.

 Outside the Hall, there's a tray of the herb, Thyme. Please take one home with you to remember Doug by. When your recipe calls for thyme, call it Doug Thyme. That way his memory can live inside you. You can enjoy what you're cooking and think of your friend, Doug. I hope all of you here today share your stories together in an effort to heal and get through this terrible grief of loosing a dear friend. I am sorry for our loss.

Thyme has a small flowing blossom. I'm not sure if wasps are pollinators but if you ever see a wasp on the thyme, you'll know that's Doug talking to you.

Again, we share your sorrow and hope we can heal from this sadness. Compassion towards one another is a virtuous practice. Lift each other every day.

Doug will be remembered to us, his neighbors, as a gentle young man who was always polite.  He could be heard, cracking his whip or walking the property with "his" dogs.  I wish we had reached out to him more.  He is in God's hands now.  Our prayers go out to his family now for comfort.

Loosing a loved one is the hardest thing to endure. I know it all to well. Doug was Loved, and the family will never be the same with his departure from this Earth. I pray for those left behind that Loved him, that they will have the faith to carry on. He is part of our extended family, and my heart goes out all of you that share in his loss. We knew Doug as a gentle giant.  That was confirmed at Doug's memorial service.
One of our fondest memories of Doug was when he came to Missouri with you Julie, and Stan to celebrate Thanksgiving with us.  We are sure he must have thought he'd fallen off the face of the earth when the family 
"homestead" was introduced to him.  No shower, heat by a wood stove, among other rustic experiences.  But Doug was a trooper and pitched right in to help with the chores at hand.

Getting to know Doug through family pictures and the gleam of his father's eyes and pride in his voice when speaking of him and telling family stories, I have learned that he was very deep, caring, intelligent, quiet and very thoughtful.  From bread starters to whips to Frisbee golf to sketching to love of learning, he was truly a unique individual. I also have learned through scattered conversations through time that he touched so many lives in such a positive way and was always helping people out...I know he will continue to do so eternally, as I learned in a nut shell, he was a great man.
